Washington, DC – November 21, 2007: His Excellency Bangladesh Ambassador, Mr. Humayun Kabir, met with about two dozen community leaders this evening at the Embassy to share details of the destructions and challenges in the aftermath of cyclone Sidr. He asked support of the leaders to reach out to others and raise funds for the victims of the cyclone and emphasized the importance of doing this without damaging the image of the country.

The Ambassador encouraged contributions through the Chief Advisor's account, which has zero overhead charge, as well as through any organization of one's choice. He stressed the urgency with which the victims need support and explained that it is better to provide cash support for the victims to choose their priority purchases and/or relief agencies to make priority purchase. Ambassador Kabir and his colleagues will meet with the community leaders again in a week's time for feedback.

BAFI provided the Ambassador with a partial list of US-based tax-exempt organizations around the country that are raising funds and have made public commitment to send their collections to the Chief Advisor's Relief Fund. The meeting was also apprised of an effort by a number of 2007 BAFI Our Pride Award Recipients to ensure that the benefits to the victims would be optimized by proper leveraging of the total collections without any organization loosing its individual identity. The initiators will make a formal announcement shortly.

Representatives of about a dozen Washington DC area organizations present at the meeting agreed to organize a collective event for fundraising. A meeting will be organized in the next few days to discuss this further.
