[ALOCHONA] Cyclone Sidr: How to raise funds how to donate

Dear Dr. Momen

Our collective effort and amounts being raised is sufficiently large that we can ask organizations to distribute everything without keeping their standard overheads except perhaps the incremental cost. An announcement will be made to this effect shortly. Several successful community activists are working on this effort. Already several hundred thousands have been raised and much more can be raised with a collective endeavor.

Organizations that are raising funds, are registered with the IRS for tax exempt status or equivalent in other countries, should send an email to me. We will publicise all organizations, offer guidance on fundraising, and keep our individuality while ensuring that the sum of the individual parts are larger for the benefit of the victims of catastrophic cylcone Sidr.

Dear Dr. Farooque:
It is reported that the overhead relief distribution expenses of the government and the military is 15/20 times
of that the NGOs. Do you have any evidence of it?  Reportedly the BRAC already distributed over a $1 million dollar worth of relief materials. The government has advised everyone to donate to the government relief funds. Thanks,
Momen

Subject: [ALOCHONA] Cyclone Sidr: How to raise funds how to donate

Dear All,

I like to take this opportunity to thank ourselves and international communities for coming forward with the help to the cyclone affected people in Bangladesh.  I think that this is a quite accomplishment and achievement that we have come together for the national tragedy in Bangladesh regardless of our political party affiliations, locations, religions, and races.

I have seen there is confusion to the on-line communities how to raise SIRD fund and where it should be donated/distributed.  Everybody has their opinion but picking up the right solution is most important to utilize our efforts and get optimum results.  I will provide brief guidance regarding these issues:

I personally believe that we can get better results to raise SIDR Fund if we follow the following steps:

1) Make your family gathering to a SIDR FUND raising event.

2) Talk to corporate America  and foreigners and ask for their help.  Since this cyclone devastation is well known to the world through media,  it should be easy to convince them to donate.

3) Write your senators and congressmen to release more USA Fund for this natural disaster to Bangladesh.

4) We can provide concerts etc. to raise money for SIDR FUND.

Now there is a confusion among us where to send our donation or where the raised money to be distributed.  Again it is most important to pick the right path which will provide greater benefit to the affected people.  From my experiences and talking to people in the ground,  I personally believe that not more than 60 % of raised money should be given to one organization.  We need to diversify our donation or raised money to multiple organizations who are credible and has networks at the ground where help will be reached faster and will be effective.

I will urge all individuals or organizations all over the world,  please do not put all your eggs in one basket.  This is a huge devastation and one organization even only  Bangladesh Govt can not cover all the places or to all the affected individuals. So please disburse fund to many credible NGOs as well as CTG Fund.  I like to congratulate to Bangladesh Armed Forces for their tireless work in the affected areas.

I hope that I was able to clarify the issues and make the right decision.

Best wishes,
M. M. Chowdhury (Mithu), USA

Change Bangladesh Organization, USA (CBd) has received lots of questions about where donation should be made and how donation should be made for the flood victims in Bangladesh. You and I have seen that Bangladesh Gov't set-up an account where we can donate too.   There are many relief organizations and NGOs are working hard to reach to the flood victims as well as CTG.   CBd is not saying that any particular organization good or bad.  We need to understand the basics during any human tragedy how it works and how it is better handled.

It is nearly impossible for one network (like Current Take Care Gov't of Bangladesh) to be efficient for human tragedy like flood situation in Bangladesh.  We need branches of all the networks to be successful in this situation.  It is good idea to diversify your donation or donate where the organization is distributing money or materials in various locations, NGOs or networks where relief works are extended.   So the bottom line is that please donate CTG as well as other NGOs or other relief organizations.  More we diversify our donation; our help will reach to many flood victims.  We do not need to compete with each other as organizations or NGOs,   but we need to create a momentum to raise more money for the flood victims in Bangladesh. Please help the needy.

As most of you know that CBd, USA put a number (US$10 Million donation from USA and US$500 Million from worldwide) during the campaign to raise money for the flood victims in Bangladesh.  This has created an impact and encouragement on people's mind and the organizations that we can do this if we work hard for the flood fund raising.

CBd has been successful to encourage various relief organizations or people to collect donation in USA as well as through out the world.  CBd has created a momentum among locals, religious institutes, local Bangladeshi businesses, online bloggers, and Bangladeshi organizations in most of the states in USA to raise money for the flood victims.   CBd has started the campaign with internet, friends, family and as well as media to spread the news about dire situation in Bangladesh and ask people to be mindful to help the needy in Bangladesh.

Just make sure we do not put all the eggs in one basket.   Please diversify your donation.

CBd has raised money and is continue raising money for the flood victims in Bangladesh. The first drive/money will go to the following NGOs shortly:

·        BRAC
·        Prothom-Alo Flood Fund

CBd is still evaluating other NGOs or organizations to receive our collected donation money.

CBd wishes to work with other organizations as a unified force to find a long term solution for the flood in Bangladesh.  At least we can reduce the pain of the flood affected people now and in future.

Dear All,

I believe that we know what happened in Bangladesh and how those affected people are  surviving after many thousands are dead and hundreds of thousands are injured and millions are homeless.  We are encouraged to see how Bangladeshi and international communities are coming forward with help and we do appreciate that from the bottom of our hearts.

Change Bangladesh Organization (CBd), USA like others organizations has taken initiative to raise money and send to the Cyclone affected people for the short term and long term help. CBd will use same platform like we did during the last Flood Fund Raising and disburse the fund as soon as possible to the victims through credible NGOs and individual distribution programs in Bangladesh.

We are asking like others to help to raise FUND SIDR for the cyclone victims regardless your party affiliations, locations and religions.  This is our moral duty to help those affected people and share our wealth as much as possible.  Regardless of how much wealth we achieved/earned in this world,  would have to be left behind one day,  so if our wealth can be helpful to others, why not?

Please come forward and help as much as possible to move forwards those cyclone affected people in Bangladesh.  You can donate at www.changebanglades h.org with credit cards or you can send checks whichever is more convenient for you.  Your donation will be tax deductible per US Tax code.

God bless those cyclone affected people.

Best wishes,
