[ALOCHONA] Re: A good read: Pakistan Elite Inaction - Disconnected And Depoliticized

Dear Alochok Robin

Many, many thanks for such an excellent article. I have read it many
times and thoroughly respect the views of the writer. And it has
obliged mt to reconsider my own attitudes. It's a brilliantly written
piece as well I think.

I'm always loathe to compare ourselves with Pakistan because such
comparisons are invariably used by many people to make ourselves look
better than we actually are. Also there are many stark differences
between the two countries – feudalism, tribalism, regionalism etc are
far more acute in Pakistan. We have our own fundamentalist criminals
but we are a long way off from Pakistan's problems of Al Qaeda,
Taliban and the North West Frontier.

Of course the comparison you are making here is extremely valid.

I agree with all your statements and I would add that the problem in
a country like Bangladesh is leadership. An environment must be
created where our best leaders can rise to the top. They cannot while
the personality cults and corrupt politics of Hasina and Khaleda
remain.

In Bangladesh I don't see any scope for a top up solution because
those on the top simply won't let it happen. It is the declared
ambition of the CTG to clear up the `top'. It's not as clean or as
precise as we had hoped – but this CTG remains our best hope yet.

We are a long way from having a Gandhi of our own – let alone having
a judiciary willing to stand up for the rule of law.

The views in the article relate to a subset of the elite – but by no
means all the elite or only the elite. In Bangladesh there are many
in the elite and outside the elite – whatever definition of elite we
choose – who are willing the CTG on and who agree with at least most
of its actions.

Thanks again for such an excellent article.

Regards

Ezajur Rahman
