Dear All,

I had the opportunity to speak with my father at the Court today. He gave me some very alarming news. Two of the jailed Dhaka University students were taken into remand on the day before and also on Eid day. They were in custody at the Shahbagh Police Station. A certain Major Kamrul came to the Shahbagh Police Station during the remand period of the two students. He took a baton and brutally beat up the students and forced them to give false confessions against Dr. Anwar Hossain, Dr. Harun-Or-Rashid, Dr Mamun (present acting Secretary of the DUTA) and Professor Akhteruzzaman from the Dhaka University. Major Kamrul told them, "Perhaps if all you students and teachers beg for mercy we will consider releasing you...to hell with your bloody independent judiciary...I'll will make a phone call to the Judge and I will tell him what verdict to give"

Its seems that this government does not want to learn. Torturing teachers and students will only aggravate the situation. As you are probably aware, the two week period within which the government promised to release all teachers and students has elapsed. They have not kept their word. This certainly doesn't help the present situation in any way.

So much for our 'independent judiciary'.
