RE: [mukto-mona] Ref: Reju rajakars dafan ebong amader oshobbota

Denying burial of a man for what he had done in his lifetime is not an uncommon phenomenon in the world. There are many instances. I do not know where Mr. Farid Ahmed found the standard of "sabhyota' by which he is judging this partcular popular action. Our own Humayun Azad was almost denied a zanaja at his village by the local Imams who were secretly egged on by the Khaleda-Nizami govt. officials of the time.
In the case of Reju Razakar, the important point is not the denial of burial but through that denial a collective expression of disgust for the crimes against humanity that were committed in 1971. It might have seemed too little too late, as some have already pointed out. Reju Razakar seems to have had a pretty good life without the community raising any fuss or bringing criminal charges against him.

I am reminded of a touching incident exactly half a century ago when the entire population of Greece protested against the denial of a State funeral by the Greek Orthodox Church for their beloved poet, philosopher and novelist, Nikos Kazantzakis. He is the author of such wonderful books as Zorba, the Greek; Odysseus, a Sequel (an epic poem); and The Last Temptation of Christ (1955). There was widespread condemnation of his religious views by both the Roman Catholic Church and the Greek Orthodox Church. Coming back from a trip abroad, he died in Germany in 1957 and despite the overwhelming wishes of the people, his body was refused permission to lie in state in the Athens Cathedral before being taken for burial to Iraklion, Crete, his birthplace. Today the airport in Iraklion, the 5th largest city in Greece, is named after Kazantzakis. Someday I want to travel to Crete and visit his tomb and the museum.
