Thanks to Professor Ajoy Roy for agreeing to head the
Bangladesh chapter of the Human Rights Congress for
Bangladesh Minorities (HRCBM). HRCBM is enriched by
people like Professor Roy. It is refreshing to see
genuinely secular personalities coming forward and
openly demanding equal citizenship and human rights
for the oppressed religious minorities of Bangladesh.
Distancing oneself equally from the oppressor and the
oppressed is never right. Secularism does not mean
distancing equally from people who want to spread
religion through hatred and people who keep religion
at the personal level.
To fight hatred and fanaticism, this world in general
and Bangladesh in particular are badly in need of
people who do not hate, are rational, and do not
hesitate to call a wrong a wrong. This world is very
much in need of the concept of justice over the
concept of revenge.
I wish Professor Roy success in his new position. I
also wish we did not need organizations like HRCBM,
and would be more than willing to advocate dismantling
HRCBM when Bangladesh would show respect for all her
people irrespective of religion and ethnicity.
