An excellent piece by Dr Nripendra Chowdhury which I just finished
forwarding to all my colleagues. I agree with Mr Subimal Chakrabarty that it
is worth a try to get it published in one of the mainstream dailies (eg, DS)
but I would not hold my breath in anticipation. Because, given the track
record of Daily Star since Jan '07, I doubt they would publish anything like
Dr Chowdhury's article. Also, taking lesson from Prothom Alo's ordeal in the
hands of the Mullahs on the cartoon issue, although by default, DS is more
likely to take the stand of self-censorship, playing safe.
For clarification, I am not suggesting that personally DS editors/publishers
are in any way : (a) against secularism or (b) in favour of the Mullahs.
Nevertheless, like many other super-wise civil society gurus in present
Bangladesh they too seem to believe that so many "good things" are going on
these days in the tender hands of our army controlled CTG that "responsible"
newspapers should not be overly concerned/critical about trifles such as
human rights, extra-judicial killings or secularism !
This is unfortunate. However, I am hoping against hope that Daily Star, by
publishing Dr Chowdhury's article, will prove me wrong. That would give us
reason to consider reading Daily Star again.
