[mukto-mona] Re: "Jiten Roy- Should we give so much attention?"

tunnel-vision is that people who are educated in one subject are
rarely well rounded individuals who can speak to all topics. Yet,
for some reason, we do expect a physician to be able to debate
philosophy.

To me "education" should always be the basis for judging whether an
individual's ideas are acceptable or not. However, my definition
of "education" is not a big degree; it is "developing a rational and
informed mind." Although, I do expect someone who has gone through
many years of formal schooling and has seen many places and peoples
of the world to be more educated. Of course, I have been
disappointed many times, as I noted in my earlier post.

Very good question indeed. When I was a student of Dhaka University,
I used to think looking at the sweeper boy, "why is he paid so
miserably for his job? Isn't he doing one of the most important
works for maintaining a civilized world by working with filth that
most people do not want to work with?" I do still think that the
garbage trucks' slogan of "Proud to Keep America Clean" is more
appropriate than the pride of many Ph.D.s that I noted in my earlier
post.

I do like your thoughts, Audrey Manning.
