[mukto-mona] Why MacCain has a better than average chance to make it to the White House

Dear Moderator,

Intrigued by the on going debate on US election and Obama Episode, I thought of sharing some of my views in this forum. Hope you'll find it worth circulating.

Cheers

There are logics as to why Senator MacCain has a better than average chance to make it to the white house. However, much it depends on the outcome of the final nomination of the democrats. It is ironic that people do not speak about the fact that in 2000 MacCain approached Sen Kerry, the Democratic nominee for president, and presented himself as a possible vice-presidential running mate which meant that he was willing to change parties. It is well-known that his views were unacceptable to the Republican mainstream from whom he has been alienated for most of his career. If anything, this makes him a political opportunist not withstanding the fact that for independent voters this could also be interpreted as 'to be a person who votes his conscience'.  If you are an American independent who is suffering from the fatigue of the Clinton-Obama feud, McCain is a political alternative. The unaffiliated independent voters are, for the first time, a political force to be reckoned with in 2008.  Hence McCain's prospects are better than ever due to the continuing Democratic fratricide.

Again for Mr Obama, the reason that he will not disavow the views of his religious mentor is that this man represents an important group of middle-class Afro-Americans in Chicago whose money and influence may be crucial for Obama to win that city's vote.  And if you carry Chicago in a general election, you have a good chance to carry Illinois with its political weight in our electoral college.  And we must not forget that Illinois is Mr Obama's home state for whom the consequences of a rejection would be damaging indeed.

At the same time, Mr Obama continues to promise hope.  And hope does not constitute a program except to those who seem to be entranced by his mellifluous rhetoric.  Nevertheless, one must never confuse the need in America for politics to be understood in terms of moral regeneration. Mrs Clinton is thoroughly despised for being an intelligent, capable and ambitious woman and for carrying the baggage of her husband whose inconsistent foreign and domestic policies many Democrats on the far left of the party consider the reason for its present centrist positions.  If the fight between these two candidates can only be resolved in the party convention the result may be a wound that may not heal, the Clintonites refusing to vote for Obama who will probably be nominated, not voting at all, or worse voting for McCain or for Ralph Nader, the consumer advocate, who once again intends to play the spoiler by mounting a single-issue third party candidacy.

This adds up to a better than average chance that the Republicans may regain the presidency which in my view would be a disaster.  On the other hand, neither of the Democratic candidates has proven himself or herself capable of proposing the kind of clear-eyed policies necessary to lead this country, domestically and internationally, out of the morass its imperialism has created for it which would also be a disaster.

So where does it leave US?

Regards

ZIK
