RSS still believes theocracy is alien to Hindu polity: Advani

Senior BJP leader LK Advani on Thursday claimed the RSS has stood by the opinion that "theocracy was alien to Hindu polity."
When the Jawaharlal Nehru Government had banned the RSS in 1948 (suspecting its involvement in the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi) and questioned its secular credentials, the leader of the Opposition said RSS stalwart Madhav Sadashiv Golwalkar (popularly known as Guruji) had told him, "Hindustan majhabai raj labhi swikar nahi karega."
Addressing a gathering after launching here a special issue on Guruji, brought out by Swadesh, a newspaper from Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, Advani recalled that RSS was accused of being an underground organisation as it did not had its own Constitution.
"It was for the first time in 1948 that I heard the word 'secularism'. When I asked Guruji about this he explained what actually secularism meant and said theocracy was alien to Hindu polity," Advani said.
Advani recalled when the ban was lifted from the RSS there was no mention from the Government about the charges levelled on it - about its role in Mahatma's assassination and its secular credentials - and it only justified the lifting of the ban saying the RSS has got its own Constitution.
Advani asserted the values and preaching of Guruji was relevant for the country as it preaches about brotherhood.
Senior BJP leader Mulri Manohar Joshi, who was also present, said the relationship between Guruji and the country was like that of a mother and her child. "He would come to know about the dangers that the country was to face later on," Joshi said.
Joshi also lauded Guruji and his preaching of brotherhood, saying he never promoted enmity between two sections of the society.
Bajrang Lal Gupta, the North India in-charge of the RSS, said a leader should resemble Guruji, who always remained concerned about his colleagues and workers.
"There should be no difference between the "personal and public character" of a leader.
