No question of returning land: CPM

Statesman News Service
KOLKATA, May 25: Mr Jyoti Basu, veteran CPI-M leader
today made it clear the state government is in no mood
to return 400 acres of the land for the Tata small car
unit to farmers as demanded by Trinamul chief Miss
Mamata Banerjee. He said this after attending the
party's state committee meeting on the recent poll
debacle. He reiterated what Mr Nirupam Sen, state
industry minister said, "there is no roll back in the
state's industrialisation policy''.
Mr Kshiti Goswami, state _PWD minister and RSP senior
leader today said the state government should
reconsider the industrialisation policy as the poll
results show the disapproval of the voters against the
state government's acquisition of farmland.
Mr Basu said, "There is no question of returning 400
acres of land, then how will the automobile industry
come up? We need industry and if the Opposition is try
to stall the work by sabotage then people across the
state will realise the Opposition does not want
development, they are basically opportunists and have
defeated our candidates by forming a grand
alliance.''He said dialogues on compensation could be
resumed.
Mr Subhas Chakroborty, state transport minister, said
the poll result would not stall the industrialisation
process but "we have to convey this to people''.

RSP hits back at Big Brother

Tirthankar Mitra
KOLKATA, May 25: After inter-Front poll violence at
Basanti with the RSP, the CPI-M has received advice
from the smaller partner.
Coming in the wake of the Left Front's unexpected
election reversal, the RSP without naming the Big
Brother has blamed it in a booklet, zeroing in upon
the wrong policies at Singur and Nandigram.
If land acquisition drives in the lines of Singur and
Nandigram continue, the foundation of farming will
collapse in the state, it stated.
If land reform laws are enacted to take over lots for
industries, a terrible blow will be delivered to the
agricultural sector.
Despite shouting the triumph of land reform measures
from the roof tops, landless farmers and share
croppers number nearly 74 lakh in the state. Many
people who have received pattas and bargadars do not
have valid documents yet.
Little wonder, these farmers have fallen into the
clutches of the private money lenders, as they cannot
get loans from nationalised banks sans valid documents
of their plots.
The assessment that setting up large industries is not
the way out of this situation is hardly what the Big
Brother, who advocated indiscriminate
industrialisation, wants to hear.
It is regrettable that poor farmers who were given
plots of arable land way back in 1977 could not retain
them.
In the absence of a land map, the gram sansad
authorities are not in a position to know which plots
are earmarked for industries and those set aside for
farming.
The issues of rehabilitating as well as providing
alternative employment to the rural populace giving up
their plots for industries should have been decided
first instead of keeping these farmers in the dark.
Poor people are killing each other on the basis of
narrow partisan allegiance. The vested interest groups
which were lying low have infiltrated some of the
powerful Front partners (read the CPI-M) the RSP
document said.
People have not hesitated in murdering others to
extend areas of political influence.
Taking advantage of the prevailing poverty, human
traffickers have targeted this state.
It is deplorable that teenagers and young women have
succumbed to this racket for food.
