Responding to the learned friend's view against poetry with the
remark "Poetry can be the voice of resistance" does not make the
point. The learned friend in all likelihood will issue the
disclaimer that poems of resistance or revolution against the
petite borgeouse are exempted. Just like religious Mullahs abhor
music but will readily accept(and even extol) "Ya nabi Sala
malaika" type of songs. The issue is not that the religious and
communist Mullahs(specially the South/SouthEast varaints of it)
detest poetry as a genre, but they abhor poetry that does not
serve their doctrine. For communists poetry has to speak of
revolution/resistance of the toiling masses and eulogize Mao,
and for Mullahs the poetry has to eolugoize Nabiji or Allah Pak's
infinite power and mercy. The Bangladeshi brand of the leftists
not only like to see poems limited in scope but also science.
We often hear their pet phrases "Gonomukhi Biggan (Mass oriented
science)" as only acceptable. To them science only means research
to increase agricultural production. They would like to prepend
gonomukhi to virtually everything in life. Pure science and pure
arts is taboo to these communist Mullahs as is to the Islamic
Mullahs. Artistic freedom is haram (sin) to both these groups.
One group will call it bida, the other group will call it
decadent. They are two sides of the same coin.
One simple truth is that to a starving man (or a morbidly gluttonous
person) a piece of cheeze will be preferable to any piece of art,
but that is not a profound thing to write essays or debate on.
