A special anti-graft court today sentenced Jatiya Party (Monju) Chairman Anwar Hossain Monju to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment in connection with an extortion case.

Judge Khondker Kamal Uz-Zaman of the Special Court-9 also fined him Tk 75 lakh. If Monju, also a former communications minister, fails to pay the money, he will have to suffer another year behind bars.

The court, set up on the Sangsad Bhaban premises, also handed down Monju’s wife Tasmima Hossain and his cousin Mahmud Hossain to two years’ simple imprisonment each for aiding and abetting Monju and taking advantages from him.

The court also fined them Tk five lakh each, in default, they will have to serve six months more in jail.

All the three convicts are on the run.

On July 7 last year, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Assistant Director Sheikh Fayaz Alam filed the case with Shahbag Police Station accusing Monju, his wife and his cousin.

The case in brief is that Monju was bribed Tk 75 lakh from a lowest bidder for constructing a road stretching 27 kilometers from Mollaghat to Town-Noapara in Bagerhat during his tenure from 1996 to 2001.

Earlier, the anti-graft court sentenced Monju to five and seven years' imprisonments in connection with two separate cases involving illegal drug and bribery.
