[ALOCHONA] Fw: New Hope For Bangladesh

Dear Readers:

A recent thread about the treatment of the freedom fighters by a fundamentalist group in Bangladesh is disturbing and I share my sorrow, despair, and frustration with Ms. Nasreen about our social and political structures that have failed to honor these honorable men and women who gave everything and asked for nothing in return for our independence and freedom.  It's a shame.

Since Hon. Dr. Ahmed took control of the country on January 11, 2006, our country has experienced many changes.  Changes that offered hope of bringing prosperity and removing corruption from our social and poitical infrastructures.  Dr. Ahmed's initiatives are visionary albeit ambitious.  But so be it.  We have seen what our previous governments have done to our country.  Our people have not had the chance of knowing but the two political parties and their schemes since 1971.  We have been pigeon-holed in our political thinking.  Now is the time for change.  But change would take time as people would need to be informed and educated about who Dr. Ahmed is and what he stands for.  It's our job to stand behind Dr. Ahmed and help him educate our common people.

NRBs could take a big step in doing so.  Exchanging ideas through blogs are fine but we need to step beyond that and start doing things.  I have visitied home twice since Jan. 11, 2006 and am going back in September.  I experienced happiness and relief among people.

What's wrong with that?  What's wrong with not having hartals?  What's wrong removing gunda - pandas off the street?  What's wrong removing the corrupt officials from their cushy posts?  What's wrong with seeing our contry moving into a right direction?

Nothing is wrong about them.  Because our country has the potential to become a great country.  She has all the natural resources to become self-sufficient, rich, and powerful.

What's wrong with that?

A lot of people are calling for an election.  But what good it would do to have an election without fixing our social and political infrastructure, which Dr. Ahmed and his administration are trying to do.  It would not be an easy fix, which we normally crave for.  We ought to welcome and support Dr. Ahmed for as long as it takes to fix our country.

Democracy, my dear friends, is not an one-size-fits-all concept.  It can be reshaped and redefined to build a nation, its infrastructures, its social and political systems.  Democracy is an idea built on the goodness of people and society.  Democracy is not a showcase concept.  It is about people and in our case, our people, our culture, and our history.  We will build democracy; not let democracy build us.

Those who are calling for an hasty election are simply trying to let democracy rule us.  They are not helping to redefine and rebuild a nation.

Our freedom fighters would not be harmed in a rebuilt nation.  Our nation would not allow it.  Our people would not allow it.  Please let the honor and dignity roll into the plush green land of our young country.  This may be our chance of a life time.
