Convention Against Sexual Harrasment and Other Educational Problems

The Editor,

            This convention against sexual harassment is organised in the background of Patan P.T.C. Gangrape, recent incidents of P.T.C. Colleges of Pilvai, Padusma, Ranusa and such other incidents of  Ahmedabad. All women - from infant to old woman - are becoming victim of harrasment and exploitation. Women are not safe anywhere whether she is at home, school, college or workplace.

             The time has come to change our mentality that all these incidents do not occur in Gujarat; they occur only in Bihar, U.P. or elsewhere. Not only that, such incidents on rise. And all these exploiters, have political backing of ruling class. The victims are fighting for justice. But, it is not enough. A long term social, cultural movement is inevitable so as to stop such incidents in totality. To spread awareness, to establish Public Watchdog System in the state and to create a healthy social atmosphere, this Convention against Sexual Harrasment is organised on 23rd July, 2008, Wednesday, at 1:00 pm. At Mehendi Nawaz Jung Hall, Paldi, jointly by All India Save Education Committee, All India Mahila Sanskritik Snagathan (All India M.S.S.) and All India Democratic Students' Organisation (All India D.S.O.).

The main demands of the convention are :-

 

(1)    Immediately implement Supreme Court Directives given during 1997, Vishakha V/s Rajasthan Government Case.

(2)    Include Students also under the purview of these directives.

(3)    The State Government immediately publish white paper on formation of such 'Anti-Sexual Harrasment Committee'in all educational institutions.

(4)    The State Government should amend State Government employees Service(Conduct) Rules to incorporate the provision for the prohibition  of sexual harrasment of working women.

(5)    Immediately arrest the culprit trustee of Pilvai P.T.C. College and complete investigations in other cases of sexual harrasment within limited time frame.

(6)    Dismiss culprit lecturers of Patan, withdraw their degrees and investigate higher officials and punish the culprits.

(7)    Provide proper facility and autonomy to the State Women's Commission in order to activate it.

(8)    The G.R. for the formation of committees of the Higher Education Commissioner of the state is  not in tune with the supreme court directives. So, necessary amendments should be incorporated.

(9)    An independent committee of eminent citizens of the state should be formed for immediate hearing and justice of sexual harrasment cases as well as supervision of 'Anti Sexual Harrasment Committees'

(10)  All girls hostel in the state must strictly have female warden in shift duties for 24 Hours, and 24 hours Police Patrolling at all girls' hostels.

(11)  Internal Marking System be scrapped from all courses.

(12)  Scrap commercialisation-privatisation of education.
