[mukto-mona] URGENT AAPEAL FOR FLOOD AFFECTED PEOPLES OF BANGLADESH

URGENT AAPEAL FOR FLOOD AFFECTED PEOPLES OF BANGLADESH

Dear Friends,

Greetings from Coastal Development Partnership (CDP), Bangladesh!

We would like to draw your attention about the recent flood situation in the southwest region of Bangladesh. Thousands of peoples of Satkhira and Jessore districts are living under the open sky without any shelter because of sudden flood. They are suffering from various water-borne diseases, facing food crisis, older and children are in a great vulnerable position due to lack of shelter.

During the first week of October the water came into the residential area of Monirampur Upazilla (Sub-district) of Jessore District from the overflow of the heavily silted 'Kapatakkha' river spilled over its embankment. Gradually water encompassed Keshabpur Upazilla of Jessore.

In the Mid-October, the embankment of 'Kapatakkha' river at the different places was broken and flooding new areas every day.  Major portion of Satkhira is already flooded due to the breching the embankment of 'Kapatakkha' river. Mostly people of the Asian Development Bank (ADB)'s implemented project KJDRP areas are passing a very miserable life, though they are seasoned with living in waterlogged situation due to KJDRP for the 7-9 month in a year. The local people have been pleading for a long time for the re-excavation of rivers those are heavily silted. They opined that if the river 'Kapatakkha' were re-excavated, the river would have more capacity to contain water and even if the river embankment were properly built then the flood might not affect them as such. Local people also pointed out that if there were any drainage system, then water would not elevated so quickly and the damages would not be so severe.

The flood-affected peoples are now demanding more relief from government and other relief based organizations.  On 20 October 2008 when CDP team visited flooded areas of Manirampur and Keshabpur, many people shared with the team that they have received only 10 KGs of rice for one month from the government as a relief support, which is very inadequate for them.

Now our earnest request to all of you, please come forward to help the flood affected people of the southwest region of Bangladesh. We might not be able to repay all of their destroyed resources and but together we can help them to cope up during the crisis period and ensure their rights as a dignified human being. You effort to help them will give them courage.

Please note that, a small initiative has been taken by CDP to organize some relief for the flood-affected people of southwest region of Bangladesh, if you are interested to express your solidarity and participate with our relief activity please contact with Mr. M M Mahbub Hasan, Partnership Coordinator of CDP by cdpmahbub@yahoo.com or by  +8801916033444 (Directly).

With Solidarity

S. Jahangir Hasan Masum
