Sculpture Again :Do Not Take Law Into Hand

We have some un- necessary problem here in Dhaka. First it started when  a statue or  idol of Baul Lalon Shah ( a mystic poet ) was erected before the Airport and Hajj camp .As Muslims in general do not like idols or sculpture of animate objects (  human beings and animals ), there was serious protest and the idol was removed by the authorities.

There was a debate about the justification of statues in the name of sculpture in the Muslim countries. It transpired that though there are a few exceptions, Muslim countries generally do not erect statues in public places and  no statue of any great Muslim khalifa,  Sahaba ,Sultan, Imam or scholar of Islam was ever erected.

The debate died down despite vigorous efforts by a section of left and ultra-secular people .People here are not interested in idols or statues. Then a group of people tried to break statues of some birds in the centre of Dhaka and the police arrested them. The left  elements in the name of culture started a movement again  accusing all Islamists. A senior and highly respected political leader also said what harm these stutues of Lalon Shah and birds would do.

We feel that no body should take law into his hand. Violence is no solution to problems though we see so much violence in Bangladesh by students, labor force and many other sectors. We also want to say to the government and authorities to do re-thinking about the whole issue. The beautification of cities can be dome in many ways.In the old cities of Baghdad, Delhi, Lahore, Agra etc beautification was done by gardens and beautiful Masjids , Minars, well-decorated city walls .We should follow that .The great leaders are remembered by their deeds and at places by building Masjids near their tomb or establishing institutions (universities, colleges,  and  schools) in their name.

We feel that the issue is really not what harm these do The issue is what good these do.We ask all to realize that Islam does not approve of animate statues or sculptures whatever you call them. We have not seen many  statues of birds in the Western countries though there are many statues of gods, saints and kings or rulers there. Our culture will not be any less beautiful without these statues. In fact if the authorities like they can decorate important walls of Dhaka and other cities by artistic designs called arabesque which consist of artistic  floral or geometric designs .These designs can be of many types. If they like, there can be sculptures of flowers or historic buildings . We ask all to consider our views
