[mukto-mona] Troubles of Taslima Nasreen

Taslima Nasreen made a strategic mistake by considering India as a safe refuge. She perhaps thought that since India is a Hindu majority nation she will be welcomed there as a recalcitrant Muslim writer. This was a wrong decision. Indian Muslims are in many cases equally same fanatic as Muslims in other nations. This is a direct result of their failure to assimilate in the wider Indian society. This failure and frustration has pushed them into the fold of religious fanaticism. Many people who stayed in India during the Bangladesh's War of Liberation in 1971 have reported that the Muslim population did not support our struggle for independence from Pakistan although there were some exceptions. Taslima would be better off and well protected in a Western nation than any other place. Salam Rushdie or Taslima Nasreen both did hardly anything to help fight against the evils of Muslim fundamentalism. Their contributions in this struggle are over blown. About the intellectual prowess of these two persons is not worth mentioning. Muhammad had many wives, he was sex hungry or he was a pedophile are not the weapons to fight the extremists. The assertions of Taslima about modifying the Koran or Muslim women should be allowed to have more than one male partner are very cheap and shallow demands. A New Testament of the Koran will not bring any revolution in the Muslim mind. A citadel of ignorance and dogma can't be wiped out with these assertions. We need concerted, intelligent and dedicated work on a long term basis.
