Re: [ALOCHONA] Cyclone Sidr: Why have donors commited US$500 Million

Dear Alochok Chowdhury:

You bring up a great question. The donors' commitment at a fundamental level is  a gesture of confidence in Bangladesh and its future prospects. Who should share in this credit? Obviously the current CTG plays a significant role thru their reform activities. Previous governments can share some credit too.

Even today, Dr. Fakhruddin has asked donors for $1 billion. The donors' reaction was remarkably favorable considering the large request. Beyond the audacity of the request, its greatest merit lies in its far reaching vision for rehabilitation and development of our southern region. Quoting Dr. Fakhruddin:

"We must be ambitious in our approach and firm in our resolve in thinking of a large-scale, long-term solution to contain the fury of Mother Nature on a sustainable basis... We need to pre-empt and prevent disasters, not just react to them"

This is the kind of bold and visionary leadership that is required to not just rehabilitate, but also to unlock the potential of the dynamic south.

Unfortunately, the south with all its potential in ship building, port facilities, trade, seafood industries, etc has been grossly underutilized. Perhaps the CTG can turn the disaster of SIDR into an opportunity for new growth and vitality.

Dear All,

I am curious to know why have all foreign countries and donors pledged approx US$500 Million or 35,000 Crore BD Taka in various forms for SIRD victims?  This is a huge Aid ever Bangladesh got in last 36 years.  What does it tell us about Bangladesh?

They pledged this amount of Aid because:

Foreign Govts & Donors like CTG and their activities
or
Because most of the CTG are Western Educated
or
Because Bangladesh is a peace loving Muslim Country
or
Because Bangladesh has huge UN forces contribution
or
Because last few Bangladesh Govts have established good relationship with various countries except maybe India since Bangladesh did not approve US$3 Billion Dollar Tata projects.
or
Because Bangladesh is a democratic country
or
They felt bad to see the picture of victims and the areas

Then what is it?  Should we give any credits to past few Govts for making good relationship with various countries in the world? Should we give any credits to CTG? I am interested to know the people opinions about this subject.  I am assuming various opinions about this subject.
