[mukto-mona] RE: A Christian Mujahid for Shariah

        Dear Belel Beg,
Your comments on this subject are hopelessly wrong because they are based on outdated assumptions and descriptions that are not realistic. The print media consisting of Sangram, Inquilab, Naya Diganta, etc. are all treading on thin air, bubbles of half-truths, disinformation and outright lies. Your kind of response confronts none of their lies. I think that is unfortunate and very encouraging for them to continue with their lies.
What, for instance, are the relationship of the three subjects you have touched upon --- namely

                  1)  Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams of the Church of England speaking about Sharia
-- the people who put the idea in his head
-- the context of English society and the current debate in Europe
                  2)  Our everyday clergy, purohit, moulovi, etc. and the service they render people
                                         -- should they be denigrated?
-- they are considered "laughing stock" by whom?
-- are they considered underclass persons by village folk?
--  who thinks, in his wildest imagination, that religions are extinct?
                  3)  Current political agenda and aim of Jamaat-i-Islam of Bangladesh

About this last topic I have the following comment excerpted from my own article on Jamaati-style lies:

Unable to change our frame of understanding of how a global religion like Islam can be turned into a vehicle of hegemonic imperial power, we are lulled into believing that since religion is a good thing, Jamaat as a religion-based political party cannot be bad. This shield of religion has served them well. No one in Bangladesh politics has been successful in penetrating the sentimentalized shield effectively. How do you fight against a popular religion? Hand-wringing citizens have cried "No to political Islam" only to fall in deaf ears of the leaders who exploited political Islam for selfish gains. The best defense that an opponent of Jamaat can come up with is that Jamaatis are obscurants, clinging to centuries old belief-system of Islam.  Soon that becomes an over-beaten horse. And the Jamaatis love self-describing their party as the sole purveyors of "Allahr ain" and any opponent is conveniently branded as Islam's enemy or Indian agent.

Yet, curiously, it was Moududi who was the astute reformer of Islam and a visionary 'modernist' of a type that has come to be known as 'Mussolini Modern'. Moududi had expressed admiration for Mussolini in his writings. Capturing state power under a totalitarian Islam that was also global in scope suited Moududi's vision of a counter-imperialist domination of the post-colonial world order.  Thus, concepts like 'reform' of Islam and 'modernism' in this context are to be considered anew. By equating normal, 'old-fashioned' religious customs and popular feelings with the Jamaati propaganda, we have ignored these 'modernist' aspects of Jamaati agenda in Bangladesh for too long and we will continue to do so at our peril.

                            Kind regards.
                   Farida Majid
