A ward-level leader of Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal, the youth front of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, was shot dead on Wednesday evening at Jigatala in Dhaka.

The victim, Mostafa Zaman Shibly, 35, was the general secretary of the ward 48 unit Juba Dal. He was released in the past week on bail eight months after his arrest.

He was making preparations to contest the Dhaka City Corporation elections for the post of ward 48 commissioner, the family and local people said.

The family said Shibly went out of his house at Jigatala at about 6:30pm after receiving a phone call. As he neared Meena Bazar on Road 7/A, a group of five stopped and shot him indiscriminately. Guests attending a wedding ceremony near by became panicked at the incident and shops in the place closed down.

Shibly was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he was declared dead. The police suspected the killing to be resulting from intra-party conflict.

The police, meanwhile, found a plastic factory worker, Hasan, 18, a resident of Sonaimuri in Noakhali, on the roof of a five-storey building at Purba Islambagh on Wednesday. His throat was slit.

The reason for the murder could not be immediately established.
