Dr. Roy, a good debater should not waffle.  You wrote that the new breed of immigrants is not contributing to American society.  In response when I pointed out that American society is benefited by their presence, then you say that my examples won't satisfy you because I am only talking about the cream of the immigrant crop.  FYI, the American society is very vast and it would be next to impossible for any immigrant group to contribute to the society that would be perceptible.  The new immigrants from South Asia are largely concentrated to NYC, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, etc.  But America is a lot more than those few cities.

Dr. Jiten Roy, the second and third generations of immigrants no matter whether they are Hispanics, Polish, East Asians, etc., will assimilate to mainstream American culture.  It takes time.  Let me put you on the spot.  You came from Bangladesh some decades ago and you decided to live in NY City.  Why?  Because, in NY City you could recreate your Bangladeshi life.  I have seen your photo in a web page where the big word OM is flashed rather brazenly.  You yourself are showing resistance to change.  It is utterly funny that you talk about Mexicans do not want to change when you are showing your utmost stubbornness to change.  Please practice what you promote.  When I came to America 39 years ago, I decided to assimilate.  Look at my actions.  I lived in 4 states, in small towns, in urban metropolis, every week I go to a church not to worship but to listen to European classical music.  I support western values and culture and I am thoroughly immersed in it.  This talk about Mexicans not behaving like true Americans should not come from you.

Most first immigrants behave like the way Bangladeshis are behaving.  But give some time and you will see that the second and third generation Bangladeshi Americans will assimilate in American culture.  When Jews came in droves from Europe before WW2, they settled in NY City, Chicago, Los Angeles, etc., and they started publishing newspapers in Yiddish (The language historically of Ashkenazic Jews of Central and Eastern Europe, resulting from a fusion of elements derived principally from medieval German dialects and secondarily from Hebrew and Aramaic, various Slavic languages, and Old French and Old Italian).  I read recently that the last Yiddish newspaper stopped publication few years ago.  Why?  Because, there aren't many left who speak this dead language.  Trust me, in 40-50 years from now Thikana and papers like it will cease to publish.  America truly is a melting pot.  Assimilation to American culture will be a natural consequence.

You indeed are sounding like Lou Dobbs now.  Lest you forgot, America is a nation of immigrants.  The Chinese kids will assimilate to American culture.  The stubbornness of the new immigrants allows them to live in big cities and become more clannish.  In 500 years from now there will people with mixed race and this will happen due to inter racial marriage.  This will be a good thing for America.

From the above sentences I must say that Dr. Jiten Roy is an alarmist.  Some Madrassahs in the Middle East, Afghanistan, and elsewhere in Asia may be the breeding ground but in America the Muslims are not that militant.  American government has FBI and other law enforcement forces.  Trust me, if Muslims are making suicide bombs, then they will get the intelligence on it.  Let me ask Dr. Roy this - when was the last time he heard that a Muslim fanatic has blasted a suicide bomb in America?  He knows the answer.  Still then, he keeps on harping on Muslims.  It seems as if he is a communal person.  Mukto-mona forum is not suitable for such person. What Dr. Roy is trying to do here is to fan the flame of communalism.  I am not a great fan of Muslim religion.  I also take a very dim view of religion.  To me, Jewish, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism are all anathematic.  So, do not consider me a great fan of Islam.  I am not writing this against Dr. Jiten Roy because he is a practicing Hindu.  But when I saw that he is pandering concocted story such as Muslims in madrassahs are making bombs, then I realized that Dr. Roy is masquerading as a humanist.  Deep down he is a communalist.

 

I do not debate with folks who have nothing but malice in their heart for other religionists.  Therefore, from now on, I won't debate with people like Sitangshu Guha and Dr. Jiten Roy.  It will be an exercise in futility.  No matter what I write they are not in a mood to pay heed to what I write in this forum.
