Mamun jailed for 10 years, wife for 3 years

Businessman Giasuddin Al Mamun, also a close friend of the BNP’s senior joint secretary general Tarique Rahman, was on Thursday again sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for 10 years for amassing illegal wealth.
   M Sirajul Islam, judge of the special judge’s court 7 of Dhaka set up on the Jatiya Sangsad complex, also jailed Mamun’s wife, Shahina Yasmin, for three years for abetting her husband in amassing the illegal wealth. Her sentence, however, will be executed after her arrest or surrender as she is in hiding.
   The court ordered confiscation of Mamun’s wealth of Tk 110.96 crore, which is beyond his legitimate sources of income.
   The court also fined Mamun Tk 10 lakh and ordered him to serve one more year in jail in the case of failure to pay the fine.
   The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case on May 8, 2007, with the Dhaka cantonment police accusing him of acquiring illegal wealth of Tk 110.96 crore.
   Mamun was also jailed for three years on June 7, 2007 for not submitting his wealth statement to the Anti-Corruption Commission defying its notification issued on February 18, 2007 and for 10 years on July 3, 2007 for possessing illegal firearms.
   Mamun, who now faces at least a dozen criminal cases, was produced in a magistrate court in Dhaka on March 26, 2007 after being shown arrested at his house at Banani DOHS in Dhaka.
   Mamun, referring press reports, told a special court, which tried him for not submitting the wealth statement, on May 30, 2007 that he was officially shown arrested two months after the army-led joint forces had picked him up from a house at Paltan on January 31, 2007.
