Re: [mukto-mona] Bangladesh Hospital in Exile

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/47524

It may appear, I am afraid, from this article of Mr.
Mahfuz Chowdhury that the health care problems he
identifies are peculiar to Bangladesh only. But in
India too such problems esist and that is why perhaps
an Indian will not find it difficult to appreciate
Chowdhury's feelings.
He suggests that expatriate Bangladeshi doctors(and
other professionals)come out with building modern and
dependable hospitls for which they can give some free
services too.Of course, the rich will not be so
attracted, as the case is now according to him, by
hospitals in India, Singapore etc.
True. But will his poor countrymen would reap benefits
of the same?
Non-resident Indians have already built quite a few
hospitals in their country. But how many not-so-rich
people can reach there? Newspapers sometimes flash
reports that poor people suffer when they fail to get
admission in overcrowded government hospitals.

But why they do not rush to superb hospitals run by
non-resident Indians. Are they not aware of their
exixtence? Have not anyone given them the right and
timely advice? Well, they know that 'cake' is
available, but to afford 'bread' even is not very easy
for them.

Chowdhury thinks that lack of understanding the
urgency of family planning lies in the root of the
misfortune of his countrymen. He suggests that 'timely
withdrawal' technique would be the best suited for
them. Really? Has not family planning campaign has
made in that country? Immediately after
16Decenber,1971 I met a Bangladeshi doctor who had
come to visit Kolkata . He told he was from the family
planning department. So family planning must not have
been an 'obnoxious'word there even then.
Current reports occasionally flashed by Bangladesh
newspapers do not expose so great a failure of family
planning campaign there that 'timely withdrawal'
techinique should be prescribed for them as a quack
may do. Or, might be my impression is totally wrong
and the state of family planning endeavours there is
really in a very poor state.

I am not not a Bangladeshi. But can I make a
suggestion? A campaign be started, may be in US first,
that all expatriates Bangladeshis there would
contribute a very very small percentage of their
income for Bangladesh Benevolence Fund. With that fund
let qualified expatriate Bangladeshi professionals
there build hospitals in their country where the
not-so-rich would be welcome by paying moderate
charges while a few very poor people with very
complicated cases would be treated free.

The expitrate Bangladeshi doctors would not have
provide free service the since they will be paid from
that fund.

If the expatriate Bangladeshis can set example, it is
expected that the others too will follow suit to serve
their own countrymen.
