MANHATTAN, New York, March 10 -- The Bengali Students Association at New
York University announced today the Concert for Bangladesh 2008, a benefit
concert to support the nearly 2 million families whose lives were destroyed
by Cyclone Sidr in November. The concert will be held on April 10 from 8-11
p.m. at NYU's Eisner and Lubin Auditorium.

BSA Club Secretary Rubaiyat Mahboob, an Astoria native who attended St.
John's Prep in Queens, was hooked on a benefit concert when approached by
Amit Ashraf, a junior film and dramatic writing double-major at NYU.

"It's great to find a cause that the South Asians at NYU and the 50,000
Bengalis in New York City can rally around," said Mahboob, a 20-year-old
Linguistics and Middle Eastern Studies double-major.

Ashraf was determined to do something when he saw the destruction on
television.

"I've been in Bangladesh during the monsoon season, so I've seen towns hit
hard, but nothing compares to this," the 20-year-old Philadelphian said.
"The 1971 Concert for Bangladesh raised $250,000 for the victims of Cyclone
Bhola, but our goal is a modest $5,000."

Cyclone Sidr struck the southern coast of Bangladesh in mid-November,
killing more than 3,000 people and injuring nearly 40,000. Damage is
estimated at $450 million.

The proceeds from the concert -- which include ticket sales, t-shirts and
wrist bands -- will be donated to BRAC (formerly Bangladesh Rural
Advancement Committee), a non-profit that alleviates poverty and empowers
the poor.

"BRAC does a lot of on-the-ground programs," Mahboob said. "Their volunteers
give families daily food and medical treatment, rebuild schools and homes,
and repay loans."

Musical acts will include a sitarist, prominent New York rock bands The
Hatch, The Fireflies, The Last Broadcast, and Julius C and a rap battle
between New York emcees.

"This concert is just the beginning," Ashraf said. "The world needs to know
that Bengalis are still suffering, and what better place to start than a
global capital like New York City?"

Concert for Bangladesh 2008 will be held on April 10 from 8-11 p.m. in the
Kimmel Center's 450-seat E&L Auditorium, at 60 Washington Square South.
Tickets cost $7 for NYU students and $12 for non-NYU students. Tickets may
be purchased at NYU's Ticket Central in the Kimmel Center, by phone at
212-998-4949 or at the door. Take the A/C/E or B/D/F/V to West Fourth
Street, the No. 6 train to Astor Place or the N/R/W to Eighth Street.
