Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani did not graduate from any madrasah. He
earned reputation by slaughtering cow on the char of Bhasan, probably in
Assam, was on the pay roll of the Ispahanis in the campaign for Pakistan.
He had some credit in bringing Sylhet to Pakistan. The Ispahanis gained
the tea gardens at a cheap price in reward. In the subcontinental
politics, he became pro-Chinese after the Indo- China war in 1962, also
had some connection with the American lobby. That was the era of the
ping-pong diplomacy between Washington and Peking. Kissinger-Nixon clique
supported Pakistan against our liberation struggle, while the Soviet Union
and India wanted an independent Bangladesh.
During the late sixties, some of my friends who led the student faction of
the Peking National Awami Party had access to the kitchen in Monem Khan's
Governor House. To frustrate the nationalist movement, Bhasani and his
followers boycotted the election of 1970, and raised slogan, "Bhoter age
bhat chai, noile ebar raksha nai.". They also claim that they wanted Swadin
Janaganatantric Purbo Pakistan!
