A must-read interview of Humayun Ahmed, currently the most popular writer in Bangladesh and once voted to be one of the best living Bengalis of the world. I have highlighted below some of his assertions that many in this forum may not agree to. Please read the entire interview to find some thing that everybody will definitely appreciate. 1. The people of Bangladesh are really happy. 2. His film "Aguner Parashmani" is the first one on the liberation struggle. 3. If "the best (sarbashreshtha) holy book of the world the Koran" could not rectify the Muslims, how come novels will be able to do it? 4. Current fundamentalism and fundamentalists of Bangladesh have no connection with any foreign powers. 5. It would be useless to raise the issue of fundamentalism and fundamentalists. Every country (BJP in India and KKK in the USA) has it. 6. Even Banglabhai, simultaneous bombings in 63 districts, etc. were no problems. 7. Price hike of essential commodities in Bangladesh is O.K. This has happened throughout the world. 8. I support army-backed govt. I won't mind seeing them in power for two more years. 9. I don't support banning Jamaat. I believe in the principle: survival of the fittest. 10. Humayun Azad wrote an ugly book. It would invoke anger of any person. He does not have to be a fundamentalist. -SC
N.B. Massive popularity coupled with accumulation of unlimited riches spoils a writer. He starts seeing himself as an authority if not a divine one. His confidence rises so high that he thinks that whatever he will utter will be bought by his readers. It takes some time for him to realize that he is now a spent force or he was never a force at all.
