[mukto-mona] Re: Scientists,Atheists,Fundmentalists (Response to Audrey and Aparthib)

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/50573

I am a new member of Mukto-Mona and this is my first post. So attack
me even more!
It is a pity that "Dawkinsiana" has already been discussed earlier.
There are only a few comments I wish to make on Aparthib's response
and the ongoing debate:

1. Aparthib's comment "I was also expressing my disappointment at such
characterization because it this this very mis-characterization
against which MM had debated in the past extensively with logic and
pointed out the fallacy of such mis-characterization."

Just because some issue has been raised before and some conclusion has
been arrived at, that in no way means it cannot be dealt with, or its
premise, and/or solution re-evaluated again. But Aparthib, I know you
will not disagree with me here. I can differentiate between
exasperation and forcefulness.

2. Audrey's spirit in invoking Barrow seemed to echo Sukumar Ray's (or
was it Satyajit Ray's) couplet:

Janar kono shesh nai
Janar cheshta brithha tai.

Translated as

There are no limits to how much we can learn
Therefore to attempt to learn at all is futile.

So please do not misconstrue a scientist's wonder at the beauty of
nature and her manifold mysteries as his ignorance. Only after we are
cognizant of mysteries, can we solve them. Barrow by making that
statement may have provoked a million young minds into astronomy to
prove him wrong, and that is precisely what he intended.

3. That Richard Dawkins is or is not a fundamentalist is not
important. Fundamentalism is not about being dismissive of other
views. The problem is that does he actually achieve what he has set
out to do, i.e., to convince people that religion and adherence to
values based on faith is incompatible with civilization as we know it
presently? Or is he just interested in his book sale? I feel that his
brand of, to stretch a point, evangelical atheism tends to get rather
belligerent, suffocating and counterproductive.

Sincerely,
Ramray
