Dear Mr. Hannan:
I agree with your opinion and I guess Mr. Ahmed has erred in making judgements on contexts of the Prophet (pbuh) in allowing dolls and Mariam's picture. It is allowed in islam to for children to play with dolls and that's that because they do not develop the mental faculties of idol worshipping at that age. The bottom line is Islam does not allow any notion or path that may cause confusion and in the end may dilute the straight path. If you ask anyone who worships idols - he/she will say that the 'Murti' as per se is not the object they worship but the inner sense they worship - Hence 'Namaskar' to honour the ultimate soul. But the problem is elsewhere. If you read the history of idolatry in Idnia you can see that Hinduism flourshed in various paths - even there are Hindus who do not worship any other god or gods except Brahma or the GOD. Well, after fierce struggle Hinduism has accepted the notion that all paths lead to One and the efforts are on now to consume Islamic staunch stand against idol worshipping any form. Wine as per se is not destructive until in intoxicates and therefore we need to keep away as per Quran. Music is not haram as per se but we need to keep away as much as possible from Rock and Bewiliding Music as that may lead to the western culture of frenzy in nightclubs. We see Awami Leaguers queing to garland Mujib's image more than they want to offer Fateha - why? Well many reasons - one may be that's more convenient that going to a village and owing to the fact that many Hindus do not know how to act in Majars. You can ask a Chrisian as well as many of them do not know whether they worship God or Christ in a church or God Man.
If we derogate from Islam's strong stand against idol making then time will not be far when people will start justifying idol worshipping. My question: Why do many make idols? For convenience of worshipping? Then why do we close our eyes when we have the most immaculate conceptions? Like when we taste something exquisite or have a amorous moment even in a kiss? Let's be frank - to understand Allah we need to cut ourselves off from the world when we offer namaj and having eyes opened infront of a deity with musical orchesttra will never allow that sirine time between God and Man - with all respect to all who worship idols.
