Sector commanders make public names of 50 war criminals

Staff Correspondent

Sector Commanders Forum yesterday made public their preliminary list of 50 war criminals, which includes the names of Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami and its Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojahid.

The forum released the list during a conference of freedom-fighter representatives from across the country at the
Institute of Engineers Bangladesh yesterday afternoon. It demanded that the government tries the war criminals under the International Crimes Tribunal Act, 1973.

The forum leaders also said they would soon publish a complete list of war criminals, who were under trial before
December 31, 1975 and were released by the then president Maj Gen (retd) Ziaur Rahman.

The list of war criminals includes the names of Golam Azam, ameer of the then East Pakistan Jamaat-e-Islami, Jamaat leaders Maulana AKM Yusuf, Delwar Hossain Saidee, Md Kamruzzaman, Abbas Ali Khan, Abdul Kader Mollah, Mir Kashem Ali, BNP leader Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury, his father Fazlur Quader Chowdhury, Maulana Abdur Rahim, Hamidul Haque Chowdhury, Khaja Khairuddin, Mahmud Ali, Md Abdul Aleem, Julmat Ali Khan, Kazi Kader, Khan Abdus Sabur Khan, Maulana Farid Uddin, Shah Md Azizur Rahman, Maulana Abdul Mannan, Dr Abu Motaleb Malek, Md Yusuf, ABM Khalek Majumder, ANM Yusuf, Nurul Amin, AQM Shafiul Islam, Abdul Matin, advocate Md Ainuddin, Maulana Nuruzzaman, Maulana Md Ishaq, Golam Sarwar, Md Akter Uddin Ahmed, Maulana Abdus Sobhan, Captain (retd) Abdul Bachhed, Abdul Matin Bhuiyan, Md Abdul Kashem, Obayedullah Majumder, engineer Abdul Zabar, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Md Abdul Hannan, barrister Qurban Ali, Ashraf Hossain, advocate Ansar Ali, Md Kaiser, Abdul Majid Talukder, Nawajes Ahmed, Ak Mosharraf Hossain.

Coordinator of the forum Sarwar Ali read out the list at the conference.

The forum chief coordinator Lt Gen (retd) Harun-ur Rashid said they published the list based on the information given by witnesses, newspaper clippings and other documents.

He told The Daily Star that they could all testify against war crimes if the trial process started.

The forum also urged all political parties not to have ties with war criminals and urged people not to let them participate in the forthcoming elections and even if they did, not to vote for them.

It again urged the government to seek United Nation's help to try war criminals.

Sector Commanders Forum Chairman and deputy commander-in-chief of the Liberation War Air Vice-Marshal (retd) AK Khandaker said, "We asked the government to try war criminals but it did not listen to us."

He urged people to be aware so that not even a single war criminal can enter the parliament.

Khandaker said, "War criminals are being tried in
Cambodia with the help of United Nations and they had to seek the UN help several times. In our case, the UN secretary general himself said they would help if Bangladesh sought help."

The speakers at the conference urged freedom fighters to be united and press home the demand for trials of war criminals.

They also slated the Election Commission (EC) for registering Jamaat with the EC even though the party did not attend the EC hearing on the allegations brought by the forum. Forum leaders said they had specific proof of their involvement in war crimes.

They also said if the EC had followed the constitution then they would not have registered Jamaat as a political party.

The meeting was addressed by sector commanders Maj Gen (retd) KM Shafiullah, Lt Gen (retd) Mir Shawkat Ali, Maj Gen (retd) CR Dutta, Lt Col (retd) Kazi Nuruzzaman, Lt Col (retd) Abu Osman Chowdhury, representatives of freedom fighters from across the country, representatives from cultural organisation, women's right organisation, professionals' organisation and freedom fighters' childrens' organisation.
