Highlights
We are observing seventh martyr's day programe this
time at Bagrijhola village
We are opposing the UAIL, now Aditya Birla, in
Kashipur.
Company goons and police are working in tandem to
suppress our voice.
The police arrest has not yet been stopped. Biswanath
sahoo one of our activist has not yet been released.
Even after so much torture by police and goons we have
not left our land fully.
We are condemning the incident of Nandigram. It is
barbaric.
We are opposing Posco projects in Paradeep (Dhinkia)
in Orissa. We condemn recent attack on local people by
ruling BJD goons and state armed police.
We want our form of development on agriculture, health
and education etc.
We hope you will express your solidarity and support
in future.
Background
On 16th Dec 2000, police firing took place in our area
at Maikanch village and three people died on that day.
We did not stop our struggle even after firing. From
December 1, 2004 a second phase of repression was
started. We have faced police firing, lathicharge,
teargas firing, series of arrests, torture etc. But
this is our fourteenth year of struggle and seventh
year of police firing. We have not stopped our
struggle.
Since 1993 we are opposing Utkal Alumina International
Limited (now fully owned by Aditya Birla) company.
Earlier Tata, Hydro and Alcan companies who were in
the joint venture of UAIL have left the area. It
happened due to our continuous opposition. Many groups
and individuals in different parts of the world
expressed their solidarity in many forms and took up
this issue. It also forced these companies to leave
our area. We are extremely thankful to them.
In Orissa the repression on local struggles opposing
the big projects are increasing. Most heinous incident
happened at Kaling Nagar where state police killed
fourteen tribals for Tata project. Now at Dhinkia near
Paradeep area, Police and ruling Biju Janata Dal
cadres are preparing for the same for Posco project of
South Korean.
On 29 November at 4.30 pm about 300 goons hired by
Posco officials and ruling BJD party attacked the camp
of Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti (anti-posco
movement) at Balitutha and set them on fire. They also
set off five country-made bombs, destroyed about 100
bicycles and injured about 30 protestors. Orissa state
police immediately entered the area and occupied the
place that was previously being used by PPSS
indicating that the attack by goons was done with full
knowledge of the police and state administration.
In between, specifically after 2000, we in Orissa have
faced police firing thrice in different parts and have
lost 24 lives. At fourteen places police has resorted
to lathicharges and tear gas cellings. Nearly 300
people have been sent to jail in these years and 5000
people are in police warrant list. This is happening
due to our opposition to Adity Birla, Posco, Vedanta,
Tata, Bhusan and Nepaj companies at Kashipur,
Paradeep, Lanjigada, Kaling Nagar, Dhenkanal and
Sundergarh area respectively.
Our appeal
We want our form of development. We don't want this
development, which is alien to us. We need work. We
need price of our labour. We want price of our
produce. We want a better society. Our fight is for
our need and for our dream also.
We invite, through this press release, all our
friends, comrades, writers, journalists, and
intellectuals to come for attending the programe. We
hope you would express your solidarity and will take
up this issue to the larger people.
