I was present at that historical National Integration Seminar at the BNR center at the Mall Road in Lahore, in 1961 where Prof. Rehman Sobhan delivered that unforgettable passionate speech. The audience was spell-bound with the oration, torrent of language of a very high standard and irrefutable facts and logic. The West Pakistani Judge who presided hailed him as the young Cicero of Pakistan. The speech had such an impact that one of the West Pakistani scholars went out and hurriedly fetched economist Mahboobul Hoq, who later became a world famous development economist, in a bid to defend West Pakistani or Pakistani interests. The speech created such an stirr in Pakistan that a section of the Press demanded his expulsion from Pakistan. Although, two economy theory was the collective idea developed under the leadership of Prof. Nurul Islam, Prof. Rehman Sobhan shot the first bullet in public. It is unfortunate, with the decline of academic environment in general, these saintly voices are seldom heard or listen to with reverence these days. The Messiaic speech of Prof.Anwar Hossain delivered in the court premises supported by this saint and patriot, Prof. Rehman Sobhan is enough to resurrect the glory of our students and teachers.
