Relatives of the victims of alleged financial malpractices, wrong treatment and poor services at LabAid Hospital on Wednesday demanded cancellation of approval of the private hospital and punishment of doctors and management staff for misconducts.

Dr Mehnaj Ahmed, geriatric department head of Brooklyn Hospital in New York, whose mother died at LabAid allegedly due to wrong treatment, read out a statement at a press conference at National Press Club, demanding that hospitals, clinics and diagnostic centres and physicians found guilty of professional and financial misconducts must be punished.

She complained that her mother Mushtari Begum was a cruel victim of professional misconduct of doctors and staff of LabAid Cardiac Hospital, which advertises itself to be a world class cardiac care centre.

'We brought our mother complaining chest pain and vomiting on September 16 in 2004, but she was wrongly diagnosed as a gastric patient. LabAid cardiac specialist visited her six hours after admission,' said Mushtari's another daughter, Mahjabin Ahmed, associate professor of Institute of Business Studies of Dhaka University.

'And my mother died within a day just for mismanagement and negligence of doctors,' said Mehnaj Ahmed.

The family filed a case with third sub-judge court of Dhaka in November 2004 in this connection.

Shafiqul Islam alleged that his daughter Afia died at LabAid due to mismanagement of the hospital on December 25 in 2007. He was even barred from holding a press briefing at Dhaka Reporters' Unity on December 31, despite he booked the VIP lounge there.

Iqbal Hossain, whose brother died at LabAid in May 2007, Towfiq Mahmud, whose father there in October and Tanvir Imam, whose 11-day baby was burnt by the operation theatre's heater of LabAid, also had horrific stories to tell.
Enayet Hossain Dulal, diagnosed first as a cardiac patient and found alright in the second test, also shared their experience of services he got at LabAid.
