[ALOCHONA] Bengal reunification movement : A new game to delete Bangladesh

Bengal reunification movement : A new game to delete Bangladesh

By Mohammad Zainal Abedin

It is very strange to note that Indian government through its intelligence agency 'RAW' (Research and Analysis Wing) started a new game to reverse history of the subcontinent to pre-'47 era by deleting the sovereign and independent status of Bangladesh. To reunify British India, a small group of people of West Bengal of India initiated 'Bengal reunification movement'.

To attract public opinion these people that prominently include a minister of West Bengal Murtaza Hossin belonging to Muslim community and MLA Haripad Biswash belonging to Hindu community, outwardly initiated the movement through a 'March to the Bangladesh-West Bengal Frontiers.' They declared to organize public gatherings from February 1 to 12 in more than 62 key rural bordering points inside West Bengal adjoining Bangladesh territory. The movement works under the banner of 'People's Forum' whose ultimate goal is to form so called Bangladesh-Bharart-Pakistan Federal Administration. It is claimed that a number of Indian political parties and groups including

Janata Dal, Janata Party, Jamiatee Ulema-e- Hinnd, PDF, West Bengal Muslim league, extended their support to the movement. General Secretary of Forward Block Devabrata Biswash was the Chairman of 'March towards Frontier Programme.' All these information unveil one truth that the movement enjoys the blessings of Indian government. None would have ever dared to undertake such an ambitious and most risky step unless they would not have had the blessings of Indian government. Indian government generally implements such ugly anti-Bangladesh designs through its intelligence agency 'RAW'.

The press report of such movement drew the attention of the conscious sections of the Bangladeshis living in home and abroad. Many of them expressed their extreme anguish and anxiety apprehending the gravity of such movement. They questioned who let loose these Indians, who also named an unknown Bangladeshi, to start such movement to merge an independent and sovereign Bangladesh with a province of India.

Reunification of divided territories or countries is not new. People around the world welcomed the reunification of South and North Vietnam, East and West Germany, North and South Yemen. All these countries were divided due to super power rivalry. Still they retained their independence and sovereignty when they were divided. But reunification of an independent country with a non-independent territory, which is a part of another country, has no precedence in human history. Reunification of divided Vietnams or Germanys or Yemen is not applicable in case of Bangladesh and West Bengal. Vietnam, Yemen and Germany were divided against the will and hopes and aspirations of the people of those countries. Such separations or divisions were the outcome of external interference or conspiracy.

But the British Bengal was divided according to the blue print, demand, guideline, and guidance of the then Hindu leaders. When the Bengalee Hindus of West Bengal being instigated by Nehru and other Hindu leaders opted to divide Bengal and merged the Hindu majority West Bengal with India, the then Muslim leaders, even some Hindu leaders like Sarat Basu, tried to save Bengal from division and they tried to have an Independent United Bengal without joining India or Pakistan. Gandhi and Nehru publicly demanded and declared if India was to be divided Bengal, Assam and Punjab must also be divided, so that the divided parts of Bengal and Punjab or Assam that would join Pakistan could return to India soon. Members of the then Bengal Legislative Assembly were divided on the status of Bengal. Muslim MLAs voted in favour of United Bengal having its capital in Kolkata providing equal rights and privileges to the

Hindus. But the Hindu MLAs opted for partition of Bengal to merge its Hindu-dominated areas with India apprehending that the Muslims in an Undivided Independent Untied Bengal would be slightly majority over the Hindus (106:100). Hindus were never ready any wellbeing of the Muslims. The opposition of the Hindus frustrated all the efforts of keeping Bengal undivided and united.

To comply with the demand of the Hindus the British Bengal was divided on the basis of referendum on the basis of the religious identity of the Muslims and the Hindus. The division was not imposed on them. They voluntarily divided their country and Hindu- majority West Bengal merged with India and Muslim majority East Bengal became a part of Pakistan naming it as East Pakistan that emerged as sovereign and independent country naming as Bangladesh in 1971.

Dismemberment of Pakistan changed the status of East Pakistan that led to the emergence of Bangladesh as an independent country. Bangladesh since 1971 strengthened its independence and sovereignty and it is a viable country having equal status like all other independent countries of the world. On the other hand, West Bengal remained under India as its province and never tried to emerge as an independent country out of India. How a group of people of West Bengal who are not independent can propose and work to merge independent Bangladesh with a province of India?

In fact, India since 1947 continues its efforts to materialize the dream of reunifying British India which was divided on the basis of the demand of two major communities—Hindus and Muslims ( The India Doctrine, MBI Munshi, Bangladesh Research Forum, Dhaka ) Partition of British India became inevitable when the Hindu leaders like Nehru, Gandhi, Patel etc., were not ready to provide equal status and privileges to the Muslims. The Hindus compelled the Muslim leaders to opt for separate homelands for the Muslims. But the Hindu leaders failed to consume the partition and they keep their efforts continued to crush the Muslim countries of the subcontinent.

In 1971 they assisted the emergence of Bangladesh mainly to keep it under their occupation, but their blueprint failed to be implemented. So they took many more heinous designs to undo Bangladesh. The slogan of 'Epar Bangla Opar Bangla', 'Bangabhumi', 'United Bengal' etc all are directed to materialize their design of keeping Bangladesh under Indian paw.

The grounds and reasons that led to the partition of Bengal or the subcontinent still persist. The Hindus always treated the Muslims as their slaves. They never counted Muslims as their equal, rather their subservient, who did not allow sitting on chair, putting on shoe or using umbrella palanquin. They desired that Muslims should work for their wellbeing and comfort as their agricultural workers, boatmen, porters. Hindus never tolerated minimum wellbeing of the Muslims. This anti-Muslim, communal and inhuman sentiment still persists among the Hindus till date. For this reason after the 61 years of partition of Bengal or the subcontinent, Indian Hindus still endeavour to undo the separate homelands of the Muslims mainly to halt the prosperity of the Muslims and encage them to the slavery of the Hindus. The slogan of reunification of Bengal or 'Akhand Bharat' is raised out of this sentiment.

How an independent country can merge with a province of other country. This is only possible if West Bengal can achieve independence out of India. Then the two independent countries West Bengal and Bangladesh can work together to make an Independent United Bengal. But independent Bangladesh can neither merge with West Bengal nor India. We are ready to accept West Bengal if its people desire to merge with Bangladesh. Such initiative should be taken by the people of West Bengal, if they really desire so. Let them have their independent and sovereign country first and then come forward to make a United Bengal.

But such sentiment prevails in West Bengal. There is no any symptom of Bengalee nationalism in West Bengal. The Hindus of West Bengal believe in Indian Hindu nationalism. They accepted Hindi as their 'state language'. Bengali has already withered away from the urban areas of West Bengal. Even the rural people of West Bengal now use Hindi as their main language. They prefer to educate their children in English and Hindi. Bengali films and literary works have little market in West Bengal. There is no protest against the injustice and exploitation that are committed against the people of West Bengal. The industrially developed richest West Bengal of the

British period now is the poorest State in India. Murtaja Hosen and Haripad Biswash and their accomplices propose to merge flourishing Bangladesh with this poor State West Bengal of India. They are subservient to the non-Bengalee Marwaris and Hindi speaking rulers.

The proposal in its present form is not acceptable. It is a deep conspiracy against the separate identity, existence and independent and sovereign status of Bangladesh. The proposal is directed to degrade Bangladesh to the status of West Bengal people who are ruled by the non-Bengalee rulers under Indian nationalism. Indian nationalism is antagonistic to Bengalee nationalism.

For the last 37 years it was repeatedly proved that Indian government and its communal people cannot tolerate the existence of independent prosperous Bangladesh. Even the Hindus of West Bengal do not have any sympathy for Bangladesh and its people. There is no protest in West Bengal when the Indian government blockades the waters of the international rivers and does not release waters during the dry season when we need it badly for good crops, but let loose water during the rainy season to flood Bangladesh that inundates the country and damages its crops, roads and highways, industrial units and dwelling houses. We never heard of any protest in West Bengal when BSF without any legal reason kills our people living in the bordering areas. People of West Bengal, including its Chief Minister, become happy when India squeezes Bangladesh and designs to undermine our sovereignty and independence. West Bengal Chief Minister to please his New Delhi mentors frequently threatens Bangladesh without logical grounds.

How can Bangladesh merge with West Bengal which is not only dependent and where high anti-Bangladesh sentiment prevails all along? We heartily desire that West Bengal should get out Indian claws and be an independent and sovereign country. We are ready to provide moral support to the Bengalees of West Bengal if they sincerely try to get their homeland released and independent. We are ready to help them to upgrade them as sovereign nation. That will upgrade their status. We will be happy if they become independent whether they merge with us or not. That will be matter of mental satisfaction for us. Bangladesh cannot merge with those people so long they are ruled by the foreigners. Untill and unless West Bengal is liberated, any movement or proposal of merging Bangladesh with West Bengal will be considered as anti-Bangladesh conspiracy.*
