I agree with most your statements - but a small correction. Presidents
Roosevelt and Truman were both Democrats not Republicans. And, US
first got involved in Vietnam in Republican president Eisenhower's
tenure, but it really got siginificant during Democrat president Jonshon.
There are some fundamental differences between Democrats and
Republicans as to how to govern. But, that has changed over the time.
For example, the Republican party of Lincoln was for abolishing
slavery, but the same party in the 1950s/60s were not that
enthuasistic about desegragation movement. Southern Democrats were
more conservative than northern republicans (read social
conservatives), yet that has changed over the last few decades.
