Re: [mukto-mona] "Jiten Roy- Should we give so much attention?"

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/47089

R. M. Islam is quite a bit out of line here.

1) What does "Dr (?) Jiten Roy" mean?

Questioning Jiten Roy's doctorate degree?

Mr. Islam should have found out before using a sarcasm
like this.

Dr. Roy does not look enlightened enough to have the
Ph.D. degree that he has?

I have seen Hindus with Ph.D. that use silly marks on
their forehead. I have seen Muslims with Ph.D. who
utter "inshalla" in every other sentence they utter. I
have seen professionally highly placed Ph.D. Muslims
who think the Quran would be disgraced if the Gita and
the Bible were to be recited alongside that book of
Islam. I have seen Jews with Ph.D. who wear silly
little caps on their head. There are Christians with
Ph.D. that are as silly as the other three kinds that
I have noted above. Dr. Roy is not nearly as
uneducated as the ones that I have mentioned above.
Mr. Islam should have controlled his insulting style
against the Ph.D. degree of Jiten Roy.

By the way, I see many people putting their names in
Mukto-mona and other forums with the title "Dr."
before their names. Most of these people have
publications in their professional journals. Do they
use "Dr." before their names there? No. Because that
is not the standard style of publications. So, what is
the purpose here? Trying to get some extra respect? I
would say people should avoid doing this. I would
generally address and refer to you as "Dr." if I know
you have such a degree. If I do not know, I would call
you "Mr.", or "Ms." with adequate respect as far as
the addressing/reference is concerned. Of course, the
content of your writings would be the real measure of
how much respect you deserve.

I do not mind if someone calls me "Mr.", even though I
do have a Ph.D. degree. After all I am a man, and
"Mr." is OK. In fact in some cultures, such as Chinese
and German, "Mr." is probably more respectable than
"Dr." Looking at my first name some people think I am
a woman. I certainly do not mind, I just correct them
if I feel that they need to communicate with me or
talk about me further.

2) "Om" on Dr. Roy's forehead?

Dr. Jaffor Ullah was quite a bit exaggerative when he
started this (he did not use the word "forehead"
though). I think this kind of
exaggerations/sensationalizations lowers the quality
of Dr. Ullah's writings. I looked up that link. It is
in the web-site of the Hindu American Foundation
(HAF). That foundation uses "Om" on their banner. Dr.
Roy is in a news item there. He was part of a
delegation from Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian
Unity Council (HBCUC) that talked about the minority
repressions in Bangladesh. It does not say anywhere
that Dr. Roy is a member of HAF. Personally, I would
not go to an Om-flashing group for help in fighting
the persecution of Hindus and other minorities in
Bangladesh. Unfortunately, the Indians that claim to
be secular/humanist/communist are too
indifferent/antagonistic to the plight of religious
minorities in Bangladesh/Pakistan. And I can see why
some minority rights advocates of Bangladesh might
mistakenly align themselves with groups like HAF.
However, this picture of Dr. Roy with a few other
members of HBCUC, does not tell me anything like he is
for a Hindu-dominated world. I would not compare him
with people who clearly are for an Islamic world.

Having said the above, I do not agree with Dr. Roy's
support for Bush/McCain. Bush has caused a recession
in the USA, McCain would make it worse. The war in
Iraq has always been wrong if the objective were to
fight Islamic terrorism. In spite of all the
crimes/mistakes that Saddam Husain had committed, Iraq
was much more secular than any other country in that
area. Now it is the land of the Shia clerics, and of
the Al-Qaeda in Iraq, thanks to the ineptitude of
George W. Bush.

3) Someting wrong with the involvement with JHAANA
(Jagannat Hall Alumni Association of North America)?

Mr. Islam is totally out of line here, and I would not
care to ask for his explanations.

I know the moderators have their professional life,
and can not spend too much time on this forum. But I
do think that they should try to stop personal
denigrations here, which have been coming from all
sources, including occasionally from some of the
moderators.

With overall appreciation for Mukto-nona moderators
for what they have been doing here,

Sukhamaya Bain
