[mukto-mona] Fwd : Re Ibn Arabi "Monster in the mirror"

Fwd. Re Ibn Arabi "Monster in the mirror"

Dear Ramona,

Most grateful for your loving efforts in the path of love as preached over and over in Rumi's teachings and tradition.

With deep gratitude, I am going to fwd it to some who wanted to know more about the immortal and modern interpretive translation of the 'real monster' within. We being shackled to a relatively inhuman and out dated past and present, don't, or perhaps can't dare to see and confront the 'monster in the mirror', that is 'us'. For, perhaps we are too afraid to even take a peeking glance at the reality of being a mere and miniscule 'one' amongst the all encompassing 'oneness' of all humanity and the Oneness of the Creator.

Dear Kalim,

Sorry for the delay in my response to your inquiries. I had not been online.

I believe the translator is the following:
Michael Sells, "Stations of Desire"--
Love Elegies of Ibn 'Arabi and New Poems.
Jerusalem: Ibis Press, 2000.

Stations of Desire is a selection of new translations from Ibn 'Arabi's famous collection of love-poems, the Turjuman al-ashwaq, providing a beautiful example of his poetic genius. Sells, the translator of a highly-praised volume of pre-Islamic qasidas, Desert Tracings, manages to convey the supple, resonant quality of the original Arabic, so that the poems come vividly to life in English.

This volume includes an introduction to Ibn `Arabi's Translator of Desires (Turjuman
al-Ashwaq) and new translations of 23 of the poems.

In addition to a substantial selection of the odes themselves, Sells provides an insightful introduction that makes this work accessible to contemporary readers, locating the poems within the tradition of Arabic poetry and the path of Sufi mysticism.

The book also contains a section of Sells' original poems, modelled on the Turjuman, which provides a further commentary on the medieval odes and their extension into the present climate of poetry.

However, I'm not sure. So I have written to him to confirm. Here's his website:

I'm also sending the image of "Monster in the mirror" as an attachment to this email.

Hope this covers it.

I have shared the piece with many. I was wondering as one of the recipients has also asked "whose translation is it?"

I went to your blog, but could not find the answer. Could you kindly help? Will appreciate very much.

Regards.

  Monster in the Mirror

"They all talk about 'peaceful co-existence' and no more war,
and 'love thy neighbor' and destroy the evil.
But has any political/religious leader, ever said:
Do you want to stop all wars? Then:
-throw away your flags
-remove your religious robes
-place all your 'holy books' in the garbage
-strip yourself of ideological brainwashing & venom
-exorcise your beliefs
-look for evil in yourself
-'I' is the destructive factor.
-Understand and go beyond.
-See your identification with your political party, ideology, that
though pleasing and security feeding, is food for division and war
-See that 'tolerance' for the other 'tribe'
is a civilized form of temporary peace
-Do not say 'the Other started!' See that You start it,
and the start is every moment of your personal life.
-Stop putting belief before Life
-See your religiosity/nationalism/racialism
as destructive identification, and arbitrary fantasy
repeated and reinforced by the millions of your tribe,
until it looks real, giving a pleasurable adrenalin stimulation...
and death… of you, of your children.
-See and declare your religious/nationalistic membership as useless
and obsolete. An old, but worthless game.
-Shed the garb of your 'ism' and your i-dentity of belonging.
-You can stop all wars. There is plenty of space and food on this
earth for all of us. It is available, in peace, only if you give up
your fictitious I-dentity and craving for power.
Within my heart, all forms can find a home. It is
A meadow for gazelles, a monastery for monks,
A temple for idols, the Ka'aba of Islam,
The Torah of the Jews, the book of the Quran.
And wheresoever its camels turn,
That love is my religion and my faith."
 --Ibn Arabi (1165-1240)
