[mukto-mona] Musharraf in a dangerous abyss

Musharraf in a dangerous abyss

Democratic transition in Islamabad is going on; even that transition is not pragmatic at the moment. Musharraf took off his uniform; does Pakistan enter a new phase of civilian rule or a new phase of the class struggle?

Definitely Bush is more eager than Pakistanis to certify before the world that democracy has returning to Pakistan. The unnatural duo Musharraf and Benazir are working hard to set a stage for democratic show with the blessing of West.

The insistence of paymaster Saudi and its Islamic allies of both Musharraf and Sharif forced Musharraf to permit Sharif to return home. They do not prefer Benazir. They are asking Musharraf to lean on the Muslim League to keep Benazir out of office.

General Zia ul-Haq, the military dictator who brought Islamist influence directly into Pakistan's government and army,  which  helped Sharif's alliance with Islamists to gain power before. Perhaps he could try to do so again.

To dominate domestic politics and project regional influence, the Pakistan military regime always has shown its interest to associate with Islamists. At present Pakistan army is fighting with pro-Taleban forces in Swat, where Maulana Fazlullah's forces having some foreign fighters controlled small towns and villages and trying to implement rigid Islamic law.

For the time being West support Benazir, what is 'half a loaf is better than no bread.' Pakistan Peoples Party, are said to be self-interested and ideologically committed in their opposition to Islamist militancy. In Lahore on November 30 - December 01, 1967 at its founding convention PPP stand on "Islam is our Faith", "Democracy is our Politics", and "Socialism is our Economy" and "All Power to the people".

In the general election of Pakistan held in 1970, the Awami League secured absolute majority in the National Assembly. Z.A. Bhutto [PPP] opposed majority leader to form a government and declared that the PPP would not attend the inaugural session of the assembly, thereby making the establishment of civilian government impossible. Unfortunately it was the Party gone with Gen Yahya Khan not to transfer the power to democratically elected people.

More than half a century Pakistani leader has shown itself incapable of carrying the nation forward. No politicians ever had the commitment to work that could strengthen the country and its institutions; however, they are successful in creating Taliban and Islamists, which threatens them to drag into a dangerous abyss.
