[vinnomot] Crying for help: 350 families did not receive any relief two weeks after Cyclone SIRD destroyed their belonging in Chandipur village, Chingrikhali union, Moralganj upazila, Bagerhat district

Bangladesh

About 350 families did not receive any relief two weeks after Cyclone SIRD destroyed their belongings.

It was very heart breaking to read the story published in Weekly Jai Jai Din on Dec 3rd that the population (350 families) of entire village is yet to receive any food or other relief since Cyclone SIDR destroyed their livelihood on Nov 16th, 2007.

Place: Chandipur Village, Chingrikhali Union, Moralganj Upazila, Bagerhat District

About 350 families did not receive any relief two weeks after Cyclone SIRD destroyed their belongings. The story was heart breaking, people are dying for food and the chairman of the Union Parisad Mr. Maulana Abul Kashem deprived them of food because they did not vote for him. This just one incident being reported but there are many more Chandipur gone unreported hence we don’t know and we are unable to render help. I would urge people like Mr. Kashem, please, please don’t do vote politics when your own people are dying. See the news at –

Upon reading the story I called Cornell Asif (my apology, I did not get the last name) at his cell phone number 011-880-1711883397 and appraised him of the situation. He did not waste time to counter the news report. So, we were able to get to the point quickly. He took note of the village and assured me he will take immediate action to send help to Chandipur. I mentioned that we can only send funds for the victims from abroad but you are in a position to directly help them. I promised to call him back in next couple of days to inquire the situation again and he thanked me for pointing the incident.

I think of this (Care Taker) movement being the most free of corruption as compared to all past governments and I, therefore, have high hope from this government. I call upon the government of Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed to help distribute the relief materials irrespective of caste, creed and religion. I call upon the civil society to come forward to help the SIDR victims. If you see news like this, please call Cornell Asif and bring it to his attention. Please don’t remain silent spectator.

Sincerely,
Prodip Saha
