Former Awami League chief whip in parliament Abul Hasanat Abdullah was Monday sentenced to 13 years in prison for amassing illegal wealth and concealing assets in his wealth report.
AKM Arifur Rahman, judge of the Special Judge’s Court-10 of Dhaka also fined him Tk 20 lakh and in default, ordered him to serve two more years in jail.
Hasanat was tried in absentia.
The Awami League leader went into hiding immediately after the declaration of the state of emergency and was sentenced to nine years in prison in a tax evasion case on December 12, 2007.
The court, , set up in the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban complex to try high profile corruption suspects, Monday ordered confiscation of Hasanat’s illegal wealth of over Tk 1 crore including two buildings in Kalabagan area in the city along with the land, $34,000 in cash and Tk 23 lakh deposited with the Barisal branch of National Bank.
A 10-year jail term was awarded for amassing wealth beyond legitimate income and three years for concealing wealth information from the Anti-Corruption Commission.
The ACC filed the case on September 6, 2007 as it found evidence of undisclosed incomes and assets worth much more than Tk 52.55 lakh as reported in his wealth statement.
Hasanat was named as one of the top corruption suspects appeared in the first list of ACC on February 18, 2007.
