The detained Awami League president Sheikh Hasina on Monday accused the jail authorities of being cold and uncaring about her health and told her counsels and relations that she wanted to take treatment in the United States.
Talking to her counsels in the makeshift courtroom on the Jatiya Sangsad complex, the former prime minister, however, hailed the government’s decision giving her ailing party general secretary Abdul Jalil parole allowing him to fly to Singapore for treatment of his kidneys.
‘Sheikh Hasina has told us that she wants to go to the United States for treatment,’ her counsel Sahara Khatun, also a leader of Awami League, told reporters after talking to Hasina.
Sahara demanded immediate release of Hasina allowing her to fly to the US for treatment, as her proper treatment, especially for her ear complications, was not possible in Bangladesh.
Shafique Ahmed, another counsel for Hasina, also demanded her immediate and unconditional release. ‘She needs to go to the US immediately for medical treatment, as any further delay could cause permanent damage to her hearing.’
Referring to her health condition, the counsel said that the kind of medical treatment Hasina needed was not available in the country.
According to Sahara, Hasina told her counsels and relations that the jail authorities had not given her medicines she ran out of three days back.
Hasina alleged that although she had been taken to Square Hospital, she was not allowed to talk freely to the doctors about her health complications, said her counsels adding that despite the request for a specialist physician for her treatment, the jail authorities sent a junior doctor to attend Hasina.
Hasina also said she would go for legal actions against five prison officials, including the inspector general and deputy inspector general, for not allowing her close relations to meet her every fortnight as per the jail code.
According to the lawyers, the Awami League president also castigated Gana Forum president Kamal Hossain for defending the Election Commission’s controversial letter inviting a faction of Bangladesh Nationalist Party to dialogue on electoral reforms.
‘Being the chief of a political party that would take part in the next elections, how could he [Kamal] appear in court over the internal dispute of another political party’, she asked.
It is unethical for the chief of a political party to appear in court against the chief [Khaleda] of another political party, Hasina reportedly told her counsels and relations.
Hasina was produced in the makeshift court for hearing on framing of charges in the barge-mounted power plant case.
