The Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general, Khandaker Delwar Hossain, flew to Singapore Sunday night for ‘medical check-up’.
Delwar left Dhaka for Singapore by a flight of Singapore Airlines at 11:55 pm Sunday, said a former lawmaker who frequents Delwar’s NAM flat residence.
The party’s acting office secretary, Rizvi Ahmed, at a briefing at Delwar’s residence divulged the news of the latter’s departure and said the secretary general did not ask anyone to discharge the duties of the secretary general in his absence. ‘He will keep in touch with us over telephone and make necessary decisions from there [Singapore]’, Rizvi added.
Rizvi said the party secretary general was suffering from various health complications’.
‘The secretary general is expected to return home within a week and he sought blessings of the countrymen.’
With the hearing in the writ petition filed with the High Court by the detained BNP chairperson, Khaleda Zia, against the Election Commission’s invitation to the party’s splinter group for dialogue in its final stage, there are hectic moves for unity in the party.
On the unity move, Rizvi Ahmed said, ‘Conspiracies against the party is nothing new and we will resist them. BNP’s stand is clear – those who are willing to come back to the party, have to admit their mistakes and renounce the proceedings of the so-called meeting of October 29.’
‘The party is united under the leadership of Khaleda Zia and we will not go beyond her instructions’, Rizvi said.
Asked about their stand on local government elections, Rizvi said, ‘The Election Commission will have to hold the national polls before local body elections.’
Rizvi demanded immediate announcement of the schedule for parliamentary polls and release of Khaleda Zia before holding the government’s proposed dialogue with the political parties.
