Govt may allow Hasina, Khaleda
to go abroad for treatment

The military-backed interim government is now thinking of allowing the two detained former premiers, Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia, to go abroad for medical treatment, said sources.
After the release of the Awami League’s ailing general secretary, Abdul Jalil, on parole on March 2, the authorities are thinking of forming a high-powered medical board, composed of physicians approved by Awami League president Hasina, to decide whether she also requires treatment abroad.
‘If necessary, a high-powered medical board will be formed to ascertain the physical condition of Sheikh Hasina. A decision will be taken about her in line with the recommendations of the board,’ said the adviser to the home affairs ministry, MA Matin, in reply to reporters’ queries at the secretariat.
The adviser has already ordered the inspector-general of prisons to assign a lady doctor to investigate and report on the condition of ailing Hasina who desires to go abroad for ‘better treatment’.

When asked what the government was thinking of doing in BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s case, who is reportedly suffering from various ailments, the home affairs adviser said, ‘Humanitarian grounds will be the basis of our decision if any of the leaders falls sick.’
The inspector-general of prisons, Brigadier General Zakir Hasan, told New Age that Sheikh Hasina would be permitted to consult any physician of her choice. ‘She wants to see the doctors tomorrow. A decision will be taken as per the advice of the doctors consulted.’
